Måløy
I live on the west coast of Norway, on the island Vågsøy, in a place called Måløy (see map). Måløy is the centre of the municipality of Vågsøy (about 6400 inhabitants on 166 km²). You find it where the Nordfjord reaches the Atlantic ocean.

You can look at pictures of my house.

Vågsøy
The island Vågsøy (våg = bay, øy = island) is situated in the county of "Sogn og Fjordane" (Sogn and the Fjords). It is one of the most important fishing harbours of Norway, with a huge export of fresh and frozen fish to all over the world.

Vestland
I live in the northern part of the Vestlandet (the western land), famous for its fjords, mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, splendid nature, fresh air and lots of space: I like living here. Måløy is not far from the Vestkapp, the western cape of Norway, easily found on the map, because the Norwegian coast line bends a little to the right there.
This region is known for its stormy weather, with heavy rainfall and storms: umbrellas are useless most of the time. Sometimes ships must wait to pass this cape because it's too risky. In the old days the Vikings drew their boats some miles over land at Dragseide, to avoid this dangerous cape.

Flora around Måløy

This is a picture of the Cloudberry ("molte" in Norwegian), very popular in Norway for making jam. Click on it and you come to a page on local plant life,  written by my Dutch friend Hans Grotenhuis, who likes very much to spend his holidays studying plant life in a professional way all over Europe.

"Singing bridge"
When it really storms it sometimes is too dangerous to drive with a car over the Måløy bridge, which you can see it on the picture below. Strong winds also causes the bridge to "sing" or better: to whistle: I made a recording of that sound January the 3rd 2000, and the bridge actually was closed because of the hurricane that day.

Click the RealAudio icon to hear the bridge whistling!

You can navigate to some more pictures of the surroundings where I live.
In the
"Photographer" section you will find more of my pictures of other places in Norway.
