The Norwegian equivalent of National Fish & Wildlife Service, Direktoratet for Naturforvaltning - DN , has announced an upcoming wolf hunt - during the winter of 2001.The hunt will be issued to remove the only 2 packs of wolves in Hedmark county, in the South Eastern part of Norway. All that is needed to issue this culling is to establish that there are 10 or more packs in the southern part of Scandinavia. The culling will be carried out effectively - with the use of helicopters and snowmobiles - illegal during regular hunting seasons. The population goal of 10 packs of wolves in Southern Scandinavia was ratified by the Norwegian Parliament in 1997. These goals are close to be fulfilled, but Norway still only house 3 out of the 10 packs. The majority of these packs are on Swedish territory, or share their territory between Norway and Sweden. There has been a storm of protests from a wide range of environmental groups, both international and Norwegian. Especially the Swedes have protested the plans to kill off the whole growth of wolves in Southern Scandinavia. We call on you to join this protest ! Please go to our protest page and e-mail the Norwegian Government to voice your opinion. |
