Los Gigantes
Costa del Silencio and Las Galletas - Loro Parque - Forum - Photos - Virtual Tour - Tenerife Directory Los Gigantes is named after the incredible basalt rock cliffs (the giants) that tower some three thousand feet above sea level. These majestic beauties are best appreciated from close up; there are plenty of excursions that offer whale and dolphin sightseeing trips which include a visit to the cliffs as part of the itinerary. From close up at sea level one can see that the cliffs are not just a big chunk of rock but layer upon layer of volcanic lava and residues which have been built up over millions of years and then heaved up off the ocean floor in some distant cataclysmic eruption. Los Gigantes has changed out of all recognition in the last thirty years (as has most of the south of Tenerife) and present day newcomers to the island and to Los Gigantes in particular are hard pressed to tell where Los Gigantes ends and neighbouring Puerto Santiago begins. The beach areas here are very small but nearby there is a lovely European blue flag beach at playa de la Arena just a short taxi ride away. Los Gigantes AccommodationLos Gigantes accommodation is dominated by the need to serve the tourist industry; apartments in Los Gigantes are available by the thousand in many different sizes and price ranges, depending upon age, position, views etc. Los Gigantes hotels vary from the older, smaller original buildings to the more modern larger scale edifices geared to package holiday tourism. My favourite Los Gigantes hotels are situated right on the beachfront giving wonderful unobstructed panoramic views of the marina and sea; for those that don’t like hotels but prefer to ‘do their own thing’ there are apartments in Los Gigantes that offer the same type of views. Whichever type of holiday accommodation you prefer there is a wide and varied selection available in a multitude of styles and prices collectively known as Los Gigantes accommodation. Properties in Los GigantesLos Gigantes properties have become very popular with holiday-makers wishing to have their own little place in the sun; of course finding the right property in Los Gigantes is vitally important and to this end the assistance of qualified Los Gigantes estate agents can be of enormous value, especially taking into consideration the different laws in Spain and of course the language. Many Los Gigantes estate agents speak several different languages in order to offer their services to the variety of nationalities looking for that special Los Gigantes property to become their home from home in the sun. Los Gigantes properties come in a huge variety of sizes, prices and standards; if one is considering using a property in Los Gigantes for both a holiday home and letting to other holiday-makers then position as in any property purchase is vitally important. One’s Los Gigantes estate agent can advise on the type of property and location to suit one’s needs as well as one’s pocket. If by now you’ve made the decision and taken the plunge to join the thousands of other foreigners owning properties in Los Gigantes it only remains for me to say welcome on behalf of us all and I hope that you get many years of enjoyment from your Los Gigantes property. Water sports in Los GigantesFor water sports enthusiasts there are a large variety of activities available, starting underwater with a diving school that runs courses for beginners right through to dive masters, from people requiring a holiday for diving to day divers, all can be provided with everything that’s needed. Sailors are accommodated with anything from a day trip to yacht charter, with or without a skipper. There are several boats operating game fishing excursions from the marina, with many types of excellent fish and with several world records being held locally there is every chance of that once in a lifetime big one, maybe even a ‘big blue’. For those that take their pleasure from watching big fish (or water borne mammals) there are many opportunities to observe both whales and dolphins playing and feeding in the water not far from shore, the boat trips that service this trade are all regulated to ensure that the marine life suffers no harm from the boats or their crews and passengers. Indeed many of the dolphins appear to love to come and watch the watchers; there are many pictures of dolphins ‘grinning’ at the camera. Going back to the diving school, there is even an opportunity to hire underwater photographic equipment, both still and video, to take home some different pictures of Los Gigantes. |
