Los Cristianos

Los Cristianos Tenerife was, until very recently a little sleepy fishing village tucked into a wide sheltered bay on the dry, barren south coast of the island with its own way of life and very little contact with the capital of Santa Cruz; in fact before the motorway connecting the south to the capital was built it was almost as quick to travel to Santa Cruz by boat than to take the twisty lanes winding their way around the mountains and gorges of this volcanic island.

With the construction of the motorway and the opening of the Reina Sofia southern airport almost thirty years ago, tourism in the south of Tenerife has expanded to such an extent that Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas, San Eugenio, Torviscas, Fanabe etc. have become one large sprawling area of hotels, apartments, shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs, all vying for the opportunity to serve the tourists. In either of these two centres their really is something for everyone; a choice of sandy beaches with areas offering everything from pedaloes to whale and dolphin trips, from jet skis to motorboat trips, from sailing to parascending, or a quiet spot to snooze away the effects of last night’s ‘fiesta’.

Los Cristianos also has its own cultural center staging, for both residents and tourists, ever changing exhibitions of works by various canarian artists and sculptors and is host to an annual Tenerife food fair intended to introduce typical foods and wines to the public. Many tourists miss out on the smaller local events that add that touch of flavour and colour to a holiday simply because the authorities in Tenerife are not experienced at marketing their products. To change from a fishing and farming mentality to attempting to predict the desires of visitors from many different nationalities with no expert tuition or guidance is not going to happen overnight.

The recent construction of Golf Las Americas golf course has introduced a wonderful verdant addition to the vistas of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas, sitting as it does between the two main tourist destinations only a few minutes from the main beaches and with easy motorway access for those tourists staying in other centres. All of this overlooked by the nearby mountains such as the flat topped ‘El Conde’ which gives a splendid panoramic viewpoint to the more energetic photographer. Los Cristianos in Tenerife really does have a little of something for everyone.

Los Cristianos Accommodation

Los Cristianos accommodation is dominated by the need to serve the tourist industry; apartments in Los Cristianos are available by the thousand in many different sizes and price ranges, depending upon age, position, views etc. Los Cristianos hotels vary from the older, smaller original buildings to the more modern larger scale edifices geared to package holiday tourism. My favourite Los Cristianos hotels are situated right on the beachfront giving wonderful unobstructed panoramic views of the harbour and sea; for those that don’t like hotels but prefer to ‘do their own thing’ there are apartments in Los Cristianos that offer the same type of views. Whichever type of holiday accommodation you prefer there is a wide and varied selection available in a multitude of styles and prices collectively known as Los Cristianos accommodation.
