About TenerifeEl Medano
Costa del Silencio and Las Galletas - Loro Parque - Forum - Photos - Virtual Tour - Tenerife Directory For many years the little fishing village of El Medano was just that, a fishing village (Donald Campbell the English holder of various water and land speed records had a home here) later a couple of hotels were added, one of which was partly built on stilts in the sea and the other further up the beach to cater for windsurfing tourists or at least windsurfers that could afford a hotel room. Many of these surfers would work for several months and then pack a few clothes and their boards into an old camper-van (Volkswagens were the fashion accessory for surfers) and head for El Medano and a life dominated by the wind and water; until their money ran out and it was time to head back to work again. The sight of these bronzed athletes, sun bleached tresses streaming behind as they raced across the water was awe inspiring even to the uninitiated, then later as tricks became ‘de rigueur’ it was even more enthralling as they seemingly effortlessly lifted off and somersaulted the whole craft and then carried on sailing, at almost undiminished speed. As with all things and particularly among the younger, more adventurous types evolution soon comes along and due to the normal quite strong winds (the NE Trade winds) that blow across El Medano most days we now have the spectacular sport of kite surfing to add to the attractions for the less energetic to watch. El Medano is not just a Mecca for foreign windsurfers, many locals from Santa Cruz rent apartments in the town for a period of three months during the summer and the whole family moves here for the children’s summer holidays (yes they have three months school holiday here) with the husband staying in Santa Cruz to work during the week, journeying down to El Medano for the weekend. More and more ugly apartment blocks are being built to satisfy the demand for both tourist accommodation and a place to live for those that are employed servicing that business. However a stroll along the beachfront or along the row of old fishermen’s cottages, some of which have wooden steps that can be lowered into the sea to give direct access from the house, soon obliterates that vision from the mind and the tranquillity of El Medano returns.
