Playa de las Americas

Playa de las Americas is the original sun, sea and sand destination for the south of Tenerife, developed in a haphazard manner over the past thirty years or so it has grown out of all recognition. With a seemingly continuous moratorium on building further hotels and apartments being ignored it’s impossible for the visitor (and many residents) to tell the difference between Fanabe, Torviscas, San Eugenio, Playa de las Americas or even Los Cristianos.

The mountains set back from the beaches in this area are becoming a multi-coloured backdrop of apartments and villas with tree lined roads twisting and turning their way around the landscape giving access to the shopping and business areas as well as the beaches. This is not very popular among some of the ‘green’ members of Canarian society but every country needs to develop its own particular economical assets and in Tenerife, because of its wonderful climate, it happens to be tourism. Traditional agriculture and fishing could not possibly be a viable alternative unless one accepted the traditional levels of welfare, medicine, and life expectations that came with it.

As a centre for mass tourism, Playa de las Americas or Las Americas as it is so often referred to has everything going for it; an incredible year round sunny climate, (even when on the odd occasion it rains, it’s warm rain!) a choice of beaches, a marina, casino, mountains, hundreds of bars and restaurants and of course the inevitable night life for those that like to party till dawn.

Activities for the restless are innumerable, from the more sedate coach-trips to various parts of the island or a trip to the national park through an incredible variety of landscapes, to a ride in a tethered balloon ascending several hundred feet to photograph the surrounding area, to a chance to go parascending or paragliding, even a helicopter trip. Water sports of every conceivable configuration are possible, through swimming, scuba diving, snorkeling or a submarine trip to sailing, windsurfing, jet skiing or power boating to a trip to watch the whales and dolphins at play. From mountain biking to mopeds or scooters to quad bikes, jeeps or hire cars to limousine hire with chauffeur, everything is available all year round in Playa de las Americas, Tenerife.
