1987: The Tempo Toppers was formed in Oslo,
Norway, by Svein Ihlen, drums - Esben Johnsen, electric bass and Dag
Bøgeberg, guitar and vocal. Played the first gig at
a party arranged by a norwegian newspaper called Friheten. The gig was
videotaped.
1988: Played regularly
in Oslo, among others at Sentrum Scene. A local tv-station, Bootleg TV,
taped a gig and it was broadcasted at TV-Norge. Recorded five songs at the rehearsal
by Jørun Bøgeberg.
1989: The Tempo
Toppers first message to the world was on the norwegian label That's
Entertainment Records first sampler named "Rock 'n'
Roll Stowaways". The band recorded a cover (see last year): "Big
Sandy", an old Bobby Roberts rocker. A great releaseparty were held
at a venue called Strykejernet in Oslo. The Tempo Toppers played a good
set and got good reviews. This year The Tempo Toppers also released their first
EP (That's Entertainment Records). It's called "Welcome
to 7 minutes and 59 seconds together with The Tempo Toppers". The EP
got good reviews and the band was interviewed at several radiostations.
1990: The Tempo
Toppers continued to play small clubs in the Oslo area. Visited Warehouse
Studio and recorded six songs. One of the songs can be heard on That's
Entertainment Records second sampler, "Penguins and
Bondage". Yet another cover: "All By Myself", a song
composed by the genius Johnny Burnette. Interviewed by norwegian rock'n'roll
icon Rune Halland at NRK radio (nationwide).
1991: The band
released an MC, named "Snake Shake" which
was the result of different studio sessions during some time. Only covers and
released by The Tempo Toppers themselves.
1992: Rune Norman joined the band on guitar and vocal. He has
written one song on the first EP and has been a friend of ours since the early
70's. Norman (we all call him by his second name) has written hundreds of songs
throughout the years (why isn't he rich and famous?). Some of the songs has
been recorded by a norwegian poet named Arild Nyquist. The Tempo Toppers
released their second EP on That's Entertainment Records. It's called "Lover's Lane". Two originals from Norman and
one cover instrumental named "Downhill Run" from the swedish
garageband The Shoutless. Played two supportgigs with the american garageband
The A-bones (Oslo and Bergen).
Throughout the 90's the band has played regularly. Supportgig for the english
rockabillyband The Flying Sourcers at Gamla in Oslo. A local tv-station,
Bootleg TV, taped a gig and broadcasted two songs at TV-Norge. No new records
being made.
1998: Svein (our drummer) "discovered" brushes. The
result is that The Tempo Toppers now appears in two versions: One full electric
version and one with brushes (not sticks) on the drums, acoustic bass and the
guitars with the volume down. This we call The Tempo Toppers Light. Played full
electric at Oslo Rockabilly festival.
1999: The Tempo
Toppers visited Tempo Recording Studio in Oslo (the studio has nothing to do with
our band) and recorded four songs with the Light version of the band and put
together "The official 1999 Demo», where one
side of the tape is a full electric version of the band and the flipside is The
Tempo Toppers Light. Played the first gig as The Tempo Toppers Light at a venue
called Munkeloftet on may 12th. Played full electric at Musikkens
Dag and did a great gig. Played regularly both full electric and Light
throughout the year.
2000: The Tempo
Toppers visited Tempo Recording Studio again and
recorded 16 songs. Played a great gig at Landbrukshøgskolen in Ås. The gig was videotaped. Arne Ringstad played bass on some gigs when Esben was busy
on other things. Played together with legendary english punkgroup, The
Vibrators, at Working Class Hero Festival in
Drammen. Two gigs on the same day at Musikkens Dag.
Played 96 songs at Håndverker’n Restauranthus in Horten in two days! Played
regularly both full electric and Light throughout the year. It was a good year
for The Tempo Toppers.
2001: The Tempo
Toppers released their first full time album,
Click Clack, on the norwegian indielabel, Flipside Records,
in february and got good reviews. Played regularly in the greater
Oslo area througout the year and had lot of great fun.
2002: Esben quit the band after 15
years and was replaced by our long time friend Arne Ringstad on bassguitar. The band played
together with english group the Iain Terry Band at the Wild Bunch Rock'n'Roll Club in Kambo and did a
live videoconcert at Gamla in Oslo together with upcoming bands, the Bazooka
Boppers and Teddy Trigger & the Gatling Guns. The Tempo Toppers appeared on Musikkens Dag in Oslo and
played regularly in the greater Oslo area througout the year.
2003: The
Tempo Toppers visited Silvertone Studio in Fredrikstad and
Juke Joint Studio in Notodden and recorded 16 songs. Hope to
have a new album out in 2004. The band played outside Norway
for the first time. Visited Finland in april and played two
great gigs, Åbo and Salo. A great gig in Trysil and lots of
fun in Bergen and in the greater Oslo area.
2004: Released our second full-time album,
Snapshot (Flipside Records), in April and got good reviews.
A great releaseparty was held at the Cave'n Club in Oslo (our best gig ever?) with special guests
surf-spaghetti-punks, Los Plantronics. For the very first time, the Tempo Toppers appeared with a
pianoplayer in the line-up. Øystein "Boogieman" Undem sat in with us in Fauske at the North Norwegian
Swing Championship. 300 swing dancers got what they wanted and the dance floor went completely crazy.
Øystein also joined us at the Rockin' All Dayer No 2 on August 13. A two-days festival at the Wild
Bunch Rock'n'Roll Club in Kambo (80 kilometers south of Oslo). Also on the bill were, among others,
Black Knights(S), Johnny and the Roccos(UK), Silver Bullets(FIN) and Black Raven(GER). In September
the Norman song "Friday" from the Snapshot album, made it to the norwegian national radio hit-list "Norsktoppen".
"Friday" held a third place at the peak, and stayed on the list for five weeks. 50 per cent of the band
has now passed 50 years... There’s no fool like an old fool.
2005: Played 11 set á 45 minutes - 168 songs - in two days at the Riggen
Pub in Drammen. Played one of our best shows ever at Gegges Pub in Båstad with a fanatic local audience. The evening ended with
beer and broken glass all over the place. Two great trips to Lillehammer, the last one was at the Rhythm & Roots Festival in
October. Also on the bill were (among others) Poco (US), Webb Wilder (US), Dale Watson (US) and Belgium rockers, Hetten Des -
great fun. A great release party was held for the Boppin' Up North compilation album at the Wild Bunch Rock'n'Roll Club in April.
The first ever rockabilly compilation with only Norwegian bands. A great thank you to American NBC Records for putting out the
single Hot Guitars with Keith Anderson's original of the song from 1965 on the a-side and the Tempo Toppers' cover version on the b-side.
2006: Played live in lots and lots of pubs in the greater Oslo area. A great gig at
Signalen a warm summer night by the fjord outside Oslo is maybe THE SHOW this year. But lots of fun throughout the year.
German Dynamite! magazine released Cd #3 with issue no 48. A compilation album with 16 different rockabillybands from all over Europe.
The Tempo Toppers shares with the song Herman The Hermit from the Snapshot album.
