I have always been an admirer of guitarist Les Spann (a contemporary of Wes Montgomery). He made (as far as I know) only one album under his own name, called Gemini - Les Spann. I was lucky to be able to trade this album against another CD I had. He also plays on the Dizzy Gillespie album called "Have Trumpet Will Excite" and a Johnny Hodges album, where he plays mostly comp guitar. I have have both of these albums. I also have a short video with Dizzy and Louis Armstrong, where Les is playing. More recently I got a DVD with Les playing in the Quincy Jones' band from Free and Easy.

If you have any other records and videos made by flautist/guitarist Les Spann perhaps as a sideman with Dizzy Gillespie, please let me know! |

Many years ago a quartet (guitar, vibraphone, bass and drums) from the Netherlands won a national jazz competition at Loosdrecht. They were called the Kees Kuyt Combo and recorded at least one EP-album. If you have this record please let me know! |
|
Also in the Netherlands there is a guitar player called Ted van Dongen, who I once saw on TV in my younger years. He had the body of his guitar protected by black fabric. I guess he probably made a recording in the (19) fifties, not necessarily under his own name. If you
have such a record please let me know! |
