This is a breif beginners tutorial for applying textures in Poser 4 using Zygotes Victoria model. It assumes no previous knowledge of texture mapping, and covers only the most basic steps in applying maps to your model. For making templates to create the texture maps refer to the UVMapper tutorial. |
| First open up your character or prop in Poser, the default setting for both Poser's standard figuers and many of Zyogote's (DAZ) figures is that they appear in the window displayed in Smooth Shaded mode and colors have been applied to the various parts of the model. | ![]() |
| Set your Document Display Style to Texture shaded mode (globe farthest to to right) so that you will be able to see the texture applied to the model. | ![]() |
| Now select the Render menu-Materials . | ![]() |
| The Surface Material menu will appear. In the Material drop-menu the various texture areas of your model are listed. | ![]() |
|
The object color is of course the color applied to texture area selected in the Material drop menu. When applying textures to your models you will want to set the object color to white, otherwise it will change the tint of the textures you have applied.

| Simply click on the object color button and the Color palett will appear. Just select a white swatch and ok. | ![]() |
|
Now we will apply the texture map. If your model uses only one map you can select the Texture changes apply to entire figure box. Click on the Load button in the Texture Map block. |

| Find the image file you will be using. Though Poser supports a number of file formats including Photoshop files with layers, it is better to use a TIFF file or a JPG file with little compression since large files will slow down Poser. | ![]() |
| Repeat the same steps for the other texture areas in the material palett (you will still have to change the object color on all of the parts even if you have seleted texture change apply to the entire figure). We will now apply a transperancy map to the Eyelashes | ![]() |
| A transparency map is a grey scale image that determines how visible an object will be. As seen in the first image of this tutorial, Victorias lashes are actually a fin like protrusion sticking out of the model. To make it appear as fine hairs you will have to use a transparency map. Apply the texture map and object color as earlier, then simply load the transparency in the Transparency Map block. The three transparency sliders determine how this map is applied. Setting the Min and Falloff to 0% and Max to 100 % will make the white zones of the map solid while black areas completely transparent. | ![]() |
|
When you have applied all of your maps simply click OK. Areas where transperancy maps have been applied will only appear as dots when in the work display and will only be visable when you render an image. Note: Poser's default camera and lighting settings are far from ideal. Generally speaking there should be more and stronger lights to achive a more realistic effect. Also the focal length of the camera should be set much higher (100-150mm) to remove the fisheye effect of the default settings. I will cover more of this in later tutorials. Happy Rendering! |
