For over 100 years the Football club St.Gallen has existed.It`s the oldest club in Switzerland, the second oldest club on the European continent and the fifth oldest club in the whole world.For over 75 years St.Gallen plays it`s home games in the Espenmoos. 19. April 1879 : Foundation of the Football Club St.Gallen 01. May 1892 : First serious game. St Gallen loses against Grasshoppers with 0 - 1. 17. March 1902 : First international game against Alemannia Karlsruhe (Germany). St Gallen wins 26 - 0. 1903/1904 : St Gallen wins the it`s first Swiss Champion Title. 28. April 1910 : Building of a soccer field with a tribune on the area of the Espenmoos. 1912 - 1914 : Team coached by the English John Reynolds 1920/23-25 : Another coach from GB (Bill Tonley) 1932 : St Gallen is not anymore in the highest league. 1934/35 : Champion of the second league. St Gallen into the highest league. 1945 : Defeat in the first Cupfinal against Young Boys Bern with 0 - 1. 1948/49 : Relegation to the NLA under J.C Townley (GB) 1958 : St Gallen falls down to the first league (third league) 1965 : Relegation to NLB 1968 : Relegation to NLA 1969 : FCSG wins it`s first and single Cupfinal against AC Bellinzona with 2 - 0. New main tribune. 1970 : Falling to the NLB 1971 : Relegation to NLA 1977 : Defeat in the third Cupfinal against Young Boys Bern with 0 - 1. 1978 : Winning of the League Cup title with 3 - 2 success against Grasshoppers. 1981 : Under Coach Helmuth Johannesen FCSG is under the best clubs in Switzerland. 1983 : St Gallen finishes the Championship with the third place and can play in the UEFA Cup. 1985 : Again St Gallen plays in the UEFA Cup.Game of the season against Inter Milan (UEFA Cup). 16200 visitors (absolute record for this tiny stadium) Result 0 - 0. 1987/88 : Marco Tardelli who got World Champion with Italy in 1986 plays in St Gallen. 1988-90 : The best attacker that has ever played in St Gallen: Ivan Zamorano! At 20.09.1990 he joins FC Sevilla (Spain). 1989/90 : St Gallen finishes the Qualification on the first place. 1992/93 : NLB 1993/94 : Relegation to NLA under coach Uwe Rapolder (Germany). 1998 : Winner of the "Hallenmeisterschaft" Defeat in the fourth Cupfinal against Lausanne-Sports in Penalty shootout. 1999 : First place after Qualification 2000 : Second Swiss Champion title! Greatest success in Club history with victory over Chelsea FC in the first round of the UEFA cup (2 - 1 on aggregate). 2000/01 : Second place in the qualification round & third place in the league after the finalround 2001/02 : 4th place in the qualification round. |
