”Kings
Head” versus Randaberg.
After
frequenting ”Kings Head” in famous Moscow Road (from Rock’n Roll –
neighbourhood of Jimi Hendrix and C,S & Nash) frequently and studying the
art of drinking before and while playing chess with very short time and very
small round tables and large glasses of beer with high gravity for years, I
finally got around with Andrew
Whiteley to set up a friendly match in winter 1993! Andrew is always one of
the favourites in the club’s blitz tournaments over 6 rounds where you get 10
minutes each per game and also have to finish two pints before the game is over.
Kings Head Chess Club is the number one chess club in England, so I guess we
were not really favourites, especially since most of the players come from
Randaberg where alcohol is banned or at least not very common!
So we
played rapid chess at Durham Castle (which is a Pub, which again is a place for
drinking!)
I
actually got to play two different players, and due to short time, previous
practise with bitter and sheer luck and guts I managed to get back from a rook
under to win the first game and in a sort of paralysis I got a draw by
repetition with a piece under in the second game!
So we made an unexpected victory against Englands best chess club. Next
time they might pull out Jonathan and Nigel, but in that case we’ll bring
Melkeraaen along and ask Clement to be a bit serious!
