Andenes

Seagulls in the sunset There are two things you can't avoid seeing when you come to Andøya- the sea, and a lot of seagulls.
Andenes is the community centre of Andøy,located at the northernmost tip of the island.

It has a population of approx. 3000.

When you arrive at Andenes, the most visible landmark is the lighthouse. It was buildt in 1856, and is 40 m high. Constructed of bricks, covered with steelplates.

During the summer you can walk all the steps to the top, and have a look at Andenes harbour.

The view from Røyken At an elevation of 395 m you have a fantastic view of Andenes and the Arctic ocean from the mountain Røyken. Andenes has always been one of the largest fishing villages in Norway because of its closeness to the best fishing areas.

You can see the long breakwaters, protecting the harbour from the winter storms.

Down by the harbour, is a large house, here lived the owner of Andenes a 100 years ago, now it is used by the people of Andenes.

Close by the lighthouse and the Whalesafari centre you find a large open construction it was used to dry the old type of fishing nets, and is one of the largest of its kind in Norway. Since the fishingnets are made of nylon nowadays, its not used anymore.

After a couple of hot summer days, the seafog often comes and changes the looks of everything...

You can even take a walk on a palm beach

Andenes harbour
Andenes Sea Angling festival The first weekend of july is usually the time for the traditional sea angling festival at Andenes. During two days the participants lands several tons of fish.
Trondheimsbukta (the bay of Trondheim) reflects that Andenes has been in touch with the rest of the country.

A hundred years the harbour was filled with trading ships from Russia, the Pomor trade. It ended with the revolution in 1917.
