Examples W.Multi

Woodgroves multi may have these types of hands. .

- Weak 2 in heart/Spades. 5 cards. 3-10 HCP.
- GF in NT. Balanced hand with at least 25 HCP and at least 8 1/2 tricks.
- GF in a minor suit. At least 6 cards Clubs/Diamonds without side suit.

Since 2 is firstly a pre-empt convention, I have chosen to let the strong hand types be game forcing strength. This is so it will be no danger to pre-empt after 2, since we shall bid game anyway against the strong hand.

Since we use some strong hand types in our Multi opening, you can define the 2 opening much better and make the responses more accurate.

2 - 2
3 : 5+Clubs and sidesuit.
3 : 5+Diamonds and sidesuit.
3 : 9-10 playing tricks with an unbalanced hand..

Look at Woodgroves 2 Clubs for further bids.

More about Woodgroves 2D weak 2:

Strength
In 1st./2nd spot the strength is 3-8 HCP. The Principe is that you should not have an invitational hand against a 15-17NT. If parter opens 2 the responder should know that the opener don’t have much.
In 3rd spot you can open with 2 with whatever you feel is right, since you don’t have game anyway. This mean that partner to the 2 opener should not penelize partner for beeing creative. But the opener is responsible for any catastrophe if his opening is ”out of” system.
In 4th spot you shouldn’t open with the weak2 variant. Only if you have 11-12 HCP and at least 4-3 in minor suit together with a 5 card major. This is to pre-empt opponents to bid a part score in opposite major suit.
It is important to know what you must have to force after a W.Multi opening.

NB!
Expect opener to have a minimums opening like; : xx , : Jxxxx , : Qxx, : xxx
This is of course an absolute minimum, but no vulnerable it is an obvious opening!

Suit length and suit quality.
Woodgroves Multi is a destructive opening with very few rules. Most is OK. You don’t promise a honour in the weak 2 suit, and you may have a side suit. The only rule is that you should have exactly 5 card in the major suit, and not have 6+minor or 5 cards in the other major suit. But you should show caution with 5-4 in the major, even if we have experienced that it is more often right than wrong to have that distribution.

More about Woodgroves 2 Strong hands:

It is one sure thing about the strong hands. They are very rare. But when the occur you get advantage from those who opens 2. Why? Because the hand type is very well defined. Let us for example say you have a NT hand good enough to bid game by yourself. With Woodgroves Multi you rebid 2NT and have all the 3-level to search for the best fit for game/slam. The poor 2 openers must jump to 3NT, and have no room for inquires.

Response to 2.

The responses to Woodgroves Multi is constructed to have a best chance to find the best fit with the weak hand. For those who is used to narmal Multi convention, pay attention to 2,3,3 responses. They are orginal W.Multi responses.

Pass You take full responsibility! If the opener has a GF hand, you will not be very popular if you pass. But in some position it may pay off to pass. With a short suit in one of the major suits and no alternative suit to play at the 3-level, you will see that to pass will be right in the long run. Pass “promise” some diamonds, and then let the opposition find out how many. The alternative to end up in 5-1 or 5-0 is not very encouraging. Here you need tablefeeling!  (Playing 4 years with this system, we havn't passed a GF hand yet!)
2 Negative if the opener has weak 2 in heart. The responder may have so much as 17(18) HCP. He don’t believe in game if opener has weak 2 in heart.
2 Invitational if the opener has weak 2 in heart. It asks the opener to pass with weak 2 in spades. Normal strength is 16-17 HCP with good heart support. You may also try the “tactical” 2 response with not much strength and 4+hearts. This is because partner may be able to pre-empt with 3/4. If opener has a GF NT hand, he will be able to bid heart first if there is a 4-4 or 5-4 fit.
2NT Lebensohl. Ask opener to bid 3. May have these hand types:
- Long minorsuit to play at 3-level. From 0 HCP to 17(18) HCP!
- Invitational hand with own major suit. Good 5 card or 6+ with max 2 card in other major suit. Strength is ca. 18-20 points. Very important to see the trick potential of the hand.
- A mild slam invitational with both minors.
- Strong slamtry with both minors.
3 Forcing. Shows at least an invitational hand in openers weak 2 suit. Ask opener to transfer to his weak 2 suit, or bid the strong version (have never happened before!)
3 Pre-empt in openers weak 2 suit. Since opener has just 5 cards in the major suit, the responder should at least have 4-4 with a weak hand. But responder may have only 3 cards if he has a good hand (ca. 14-17)
3 Game forcing with heart suit (5+). Responder has strength enough to bid game by himself even if opener just has “garbage”. But responder needs support in heart, or 3NT may be the best shot.
3 Game forcing with spade suit (5+). Responder has strength enough to bid game by himself even if opener just has “garbage”. But responder needs support in spade, or 3NT may be the best shot.
3NT To play. Don't need to know which major suit opener has.
4 Pre-empt with both minor. Ask opener to pass with better club, or bid 4 with better diamond.
