Thank you for your interest in our bid to host the Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Games in Vancouver and Whistler in 2010, and please feel free to share this note with friends and interested colleagues. Enjoy the read.

What's happening to win the right to host the 2010 Olympic Winter Games Planning for a major event that includes 17 sports and an estimated 6,000 athletes and officials from around the world is a complex task that involves years of effort. That work is currently underway by the organization whose goal is to win the right to host the Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Games in 2010 for Vancouver and Whistler. The Vancouver Whistler 2010 Bid Corporation was formed in 1999 after the Canadian Olympic Association (COA) selected these communities to represent Canada in the global competition to host the 2010 Winter Games. Every two years, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) invites bids from National Olympic Committees to host Winter and Summer Games. This fall, the IOC will be calling for applicants for the 2010 Winter Games. At that time, the COA will inform the IOC that the Canadian Bid for 2010 is the joint proposal from Vancouver and Whistler. The IOC will determine the host community for the 2010 Games in 2003. The Vancouver Whistler proposal calls for the ice sports to be held in Vancouver. Those events include hockey, figure skating, speed skating, sledge ice hockey, sledge ice racing and curling. The snow events, including alpine skiing, freestyle skiing, snowboard, cross-country skiing, bobsleigh, luge, skeleton, biathlon, Nordic combined and ski jumping are proposed for the Whistler region. Imagine Canada's athletes going for gold here at home. Imagine welcoming the world to British Columbia. Imagine ... the Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic Games in Whistler and Vancouver in 2010!

That's our vision. Turning that vision into reality is a challenging and exciting job. We're working with the communities of Whistler and Vancouver to put forward a technically superior and winning bid for 2010. It will be a bid that supports the long-term plans for Whistler and Vancouver and a bid that creates enduring legacies for youth and sport development, our province, our country and the Olympic movement.

ASPIRE is the official newsletter of Florida 2012, Inc., representing Tampa and Florida s bid to be designated the U.S. Candidate city for the 2012 Olympic Games

USOC Site Evaluation Team Celebrates the Journey

After three days full of venue visits, formal presentations, Olympic reunions, fun and financial discussions that made up the United States Olympic Committee’s (USOC ) SiteVisit, Charles Moore, USOC Site Evaluation Team Chairman reported, "Tampa is a long term player and a vital partner of the USOC."

Embracing Florida 2012’s bid theme, "Celebrate the Journey," the site visit was a true celebration of the journey to the Olympic Games and featured two days of in-depth presentations and venue tours of how the Olympic Games would be handled if Tampa were chosen the U.S. Candidate City.

The visit featured the four pillars of Florida 2012’s bid effort: athletes, Olympic Family and families, legacy and most importantly, fun.

The group highlighted its commitment to the Olympic Family, families and athletes by pledging to provide one week’s accommodations and event tickets for two family members of each Olympian. "We are committed to the concepts of family and fun for these Olympic

Games," said Florida 2012 Chairman Sandy MacKinnon. "You have earned your reputation as the crossroads of America," Moore said at the USOC press conference, hosted by the University of Tampa. "At every step, we were encouraged by every person we met. We were impressed with your leadership."

Florida 2012 has done its job well, according to Moore and Greg Harney, USOC Managing Director. "You have a very clear vision of what you want," Harney said. "That is what we look for. We feel good about your team and how it can execute."

The site visit was made possible and executed well by hundreds of dedicated volunteers, community leaders, corporate supporters and staff members. "We thank our volunteers and supporters for making the site visit a great success, and a wonderful step in our journey," said Ed Turanchik, President and CEO, Florida 2012.
