Samlertreff
i Oslo Rådhus mars 2002 |
| Fredag
15. og lørdag 16. mars 2002 var ca. 60
samlere i Oslo Rådhus for å feire 50års-jubileumet for OL i
Oslo i 1952 med en samlerfestival.
Les om treffet og nye pins her. |
|
Sydney-pins.
Bilder av nye
pins
finner du her. Bilder fra festivalen

The
good, the bad and the ugly
in the Salt Lake
Olympics
|
Well, I'm back from SLC. My
first Olympics was in 1996 and I was a VERY novice collector. This
time around, I was armed with a lot more pins and a bit more more
knowledge. I was in SLC for 7 days and I did a lot of trading (at
least from my perspective) so I thought I would share some of
the good - the bad - and the ugly of
my Olympic and pin trading experiences.
The Good:
1. The people of Utah and SLC in particular were wonderful!
Everyone we met was upbeat and positive which made our trip even
better.
2. The volunteers of the games were fantastic. Thanks to all of you
for making the games a success.
3. The events we went to were all great. We averaged 1 event per day
for the 6 days we were there and we enjoyed them all.
4. The weather was fantastic! Living in Texas, I was a bit concerned
that I might freeze my butt off but we couldn't have asked for
better weather. My sincere thanks to whoever was in charge of the
weather.
5. I had a blast trading pins at SLC. The mascot pins were a great
hit with the kids of course and they were scurrying all over the
place hunting for mascot pins. My best trading with kids occurred at
the 2 outdoor venues I went to (M Downhill Combined and Men's team
120K Ski Jump). At those venues there was nothing else to do so the
kids were running all over looking for trades. It was a blast.
6. The "America's Bravest" pins were popular with people as was
anything red-white-blue. If I would have been thinking, I would have
ordered extras of the Police and Army pins to give away or trade
with all the police volunteers and military security forces.
Anything with a red-white-blue theme was extremely popular and I
traded all of mine away within the first few days. Dinosaurs and
mascots were popular with the kids. Everyone also wanted to see the
famous "green Jell-O" pin but I did not have one to show. I heard
they were selling for up to $200. Crazy!
7. I didn't spend any time actively perusing athletes or officials
but I did manage to run into a few and I did get a few NOC pins that
will go into my personal collection. I rented a room in a persons
house and also sharing the house were a couple of collectors from
Lithuania. Needless to say, I obtained a bunch of Lithuanian NOC
pins. Fortunately I had obtained a few extras of some decent pins so
it wasn't a complete one-sided trade. They kept wanting to give me
more but I had to stop them because I was feeling guilty. Great
guys. If everyone in Lithuania is half as nice as they were, I've
got to go there some day.I'll be sending a donation to their Olympic
Committee to make up for their generosity.
8. The pin dealers who were located in the indoor trading area in
downtown SLC. The place right on the train line with all the ticket
scalpers - I forget the name of the place. I made a lot of trades in
there and from what I observed, they were all very fair in pricing
and in trading with people. (see my "ugly" section to contrast
this). Who ran this area of dealer tables? I don't know if they were
intentionally selective about which dealers could have a table or if
it was just good luck. Job well done whoever you are.
9. Housing. We rented a room in a house in SLC and it was perfect.
Nothing fancy but clean and nice. Our host was great and he did Utah
proud.
10. Getting to meet some of my fellow pin traders/collectors. It was
really nice to finally get to put faces with names. I'm sorry I
didn't get to meet more of you.
11. Food Prices. Wile there wasn't an abundance of food vendors on
the streets, the prices at local restaurants were reasonable. I was
expecting the downtown restaurants to have inflated prices but that
didn't seem to be the case. Or, if they did inflate the prices,
their original prices must have been dirt cheap! Either way, my food
cost was much lower that expected. Thank you SLC business people.
12. Ticket scalpers on every corner made it easy to get tickets for
just about any event IF you were willing to pay the price. Many
prices were inflated for the popular events but I know several
people who even got tickets at less than face value so there were
bargains to be found if you looked. Plus, with scalpers you could
pick your seats before you paid for them! Is scalping common in
other countries or is it an American thing? I'm thinking that for
Athens 2004, I might be better off buying from scalpers than buying
in advance (see #3, #4 and #5 below about my ticketing problems).
The Bad:
1. Ticket scalpers on every corner sure became annoying! Some of
them were quite aggressive and obnoxious.
2. Transportation. The media certainly claimed how great the
transportation was but we had problems on 2 out of our 6 days.
Perhaps transportation was great compared to other winter games but
I was not entirely pleased. I was much happier with Atlanta in 1996
which is funny because the media portrayed Atlanta as having bad
transportation and SLC as having good transportation. Maybe I was
lucky in 1996 and unlucky in 2002?
3. Ticketing for events part 1. The SLOC claimed that the earlier
you bought your tickets, the better your seats would be. We bought
our tickets within 6 hours of them going on sale. However, at
several venues, we had people around us who also ordered over the
web but they waited until either just before the initial order phase
deadline or had bought them later when other tickets mysteriously
became available. Obviously, there was no advantage to ordering
early.
4. Ticketing for events part 2. We bought ticket "packages" from the
SLOC. In one case, we had 2 events scheduled on 1 day. Using the
recommended public transportation, it was impossible to see both
events in their entirety. If you had a car, no problem. If you used
the buses (like we did), you either had to leave the morning event
early or arrive late for the evening event. Not good.
5. Ticketing for events part 3. SLOC made it seem like the only way
to get tickets would be to advance order and order their packages.
In our packages, we ended up with events we didn't even want. Then,
the closer we got to the games, the more tickets that mysteriously
kept coming available. I really regret buying tickets over a year in
advance.
6. Prices for all Olympic merchandise in SLC were incredibly high in
my opinion. But, I guess the demand was their since the lines for
the Olympic stores were always really long. I especially was
troubled by the high prices for pins. From what I saw, most of the
pins that appealed to the kids (mascots, dinosaurs, etc) were very
much inflated in price. Before the games began, mascot pins were
probably my slowest selling pins. At the games, they were the
hottest. I guess with all the kids wanting their parents to buy them
the "cute" pins, prices really rose. I know, I know, supply and
demand. We can argue all day long about the laws of supply and
demand and the capitalist in me understands that. However, it still
bothered me that prices were so high for generic types of pins.
The Ugly:
Many of the pin "dealers" really upset me. There were exceptions of
course (see #7 above). Most of the dealers that I approached for
trading did not offer equitable trades and I thought they were
really trying to come out at the good end of the deal instead of
being fair and equitable. I really feel sorry for all the novices
that were taken advantage of - both in trading and in prices. I saw
numerous example of dealers telling people how really "rare" some
generic type SLC pin was and how "valuable" it would become. Of
course, people bought into it and paid the high price. I'm finally
starting to understand why so many collectors seem to despise pin
"dealers". I also saw examples of dealers knowingly trade away one
of their cute mascot pins to a kid and then pick out a good pin in
return. I saw one kid who wanted a $5 pin from a dealer and in
return, the dealer took the kids original 3.2 beer pin and he
immediately put it on his $25 pin board. He obviously knew he was
trading a $5 pin for a $25 pin. One dealer wanted my SLC "Hockey
Mom" pin (nothing fancy I know) and he offered me some cheap piece
of tin that said "Soccer Mom - no SLC logo, no rings, no federation,
nothing. Just a $1 piece of metal. I'm sure my badmouthing of
dealers is going to ruffle more than a few feathers here but hey,
I'm just telling you what I saw. Maybe my perspective is unique so
feel free to disagree. That's the beauty of free speech. We are all
entitled to our opinions. Perhaps the difference is in collectors
who also sell extra pins versus people who are selling pins as a
business. The problem is that the consumer does not know or see the
difference until after the fact. Heck, I sell pins and up until now,
I considered myself a collector/dealer. Now, I cringe at the thought
of being grouped with some of the "dealers" I saw.
Well, that's it for my ramblings about the games and about the
pin trading. Overall, the good far outweighed the bad and the ugly
and my recommendation is that if you like the Olympics, you should
go to at least 1 Games in person at some point in your life. My
experience has been that it is very different than seeing it on TV.
In some ways better and in some ways worse but definitely different
and definitely worth experiencing live. For me, the pin trading is
just a bonus. |

City pins,
Sydney-pins og kommune-pins.

Pinsfestivalen i Bø 2001 |
| Den
9. pinsfestivalen i Bø ble holdt helgen 27. – 29. juli.
Pinsfestivalen gikk i Telemarkshallen sammen med
antikk og brukt-messen. |
|
(By Ivar H. Karlsen - 3.08.2001).
utlendinger, bl.a. fra Finland.
Salget

Knock-offs
- fake pins: be aware! |
| Salt Lake City fakes |
(By Alan
Peterson alan@peterson.net
- 4.3.2001) Over the past
couple of years, I've seen and bought for my own collection
several knock-offs of rare Salt Lake City pins. From time to
time, I've seen these knock-offs show up for $10 or so, I
think it's time to make some information public so that buyers
and sellers can be on the lookout for these worthless fakes.
I've just made major changes to my web site adding a lot of
pins accumulated in the last five years including SLC bid logo
pins, As part of my web site update, I've added a section
dedicated to knock-offs including documantation to let people
know what these knock-offs look like and how to tell them from
the originals. Please see my web site at: http://members.aol.com/alpine205/index.htm#knock
(Later information received) Mark Stewart
has a page on his Salt Lake pin site devoted to fakes and
knock-offs. Go to www.pinfever.com
see http://www.pinfever.com/fake.htm
Editorial
note: It has been common to say "knock-off" referring
to a pin that was not remade, but was being offered as if it
was original. Other terms used are
bogus, unauthorized or fantasy pin. Fakes are normally remakes
of existing pins. |
