Why do we urge to explain things? Why do we want to have opinions on life and the things and people we see? Maybe because it is a deep need in man to make order in the chaos he experiences. The more order that is made, the safer things feel. Things are put in their right place, things can be explained and understood, as we categorize. But is something lost when a phenomenon goes from chaos to category? It is my strong opinion that it is so. Especially when categorizing people. So I actually resent phrases as "The women of Thailand". But why do I write it? It is especially dangerous when categories on people are believed to be absolutes. For example is it hard for some people to accept that the category "heterosexual" is not absolute. The western culture has driven classification to its limits. This has put our culture in a lead economical position in the world. But has something been lost in the process? When looking at the happy Thai's it may seem so. |
