The Summer of Chaos has ended.
Ansalon's nightmare has only just begun.
The gods have departed the world, heralding a new Age of Mortals. But before the dust of war can settle, vast shadows cover the land. Dragons have come to Ansalon, larger and more powerful than any ever seen, and they will wreak havoc on nations still trembling from war. As the lands themselves begin to change under the dire magic of the new dragon overlords, new heroes arise to lead the fight for freedom.
I was wondering how this book would be, as it is not written by Weis & Hickman, though still a level 2 trilogy. My experience was positive. It's nice to read central stories by other authors. Dragons of a New Age is written by Jean Rabe - as is Dhamon Saga which relates.
The gods have left and the world is in a difficult situation. The Dragons are conquering the lands, the largest killing their enemies. 5 large dragons have taken their realm. They are ruthless. They require taxes and services and they have many servants, including the Knights of Takhisis. There is still hope though. A group sets out to do what they can to prevent the dragons ruling and bring hope to people.
We follow a former knight named Dhamon Grimwulf. He's in Solace to give his respects to the Heroes of the Lance at their tomb. While doing so, Dhamon is contacted by Goldmoon through a spirit only he can see. Goldmoon has been looking long for a knight to help her in the resistance to the dragon lords. He sets of to the Citadel of Light where she practises her healing, together with a pair of kender (Blister & Raph), as he feels he has no purpose.
Goldmoon sends Dhamon, the kender and Jasper, cousin of Flint Fireforge, to look for Palin Majere, the famous sorcerer, near the city of Palanthas. He has half of an old dragonlance with which she hope will give them a better chance. They travel with Jasper's boat and hire crew; Rig-Mer Krel (Captain), Shaon and Groller with his wolf Fury. On their way they pick up a kagonesti, Feril, which is in trouble with some Knights of Takhisis. She has been driven from her homeland by the dragon Frost which has altered the lands to ice and snow.
They have to sail trough the dragons territory and barely escapes with the help of Ferils nature magic skills. Through more storms and bad weather they finally arrive Palanthas harbour. The party splits up, some staying with the ship. They set of to find Palin at a place called The Lonely Refuge. On their way they learn that villages are empty, but one little boy. People have been captured by spawn, created by the Blue dragon Khellendros. They manage to reach their goal and with Palin they head back to search for the the second part of the lance.
Meanwhile the others are taken captured by Khelendros ogre servants. Dhamon, Palin and the others manages to rescue their companions. They then get their hands on the lance just as Palanthas is attacked by Gale, a dragon on a mission for Khellendros. In the chaos, Shaon get skilled. It is also believed Dhamon dies too, but he survives. And the group learns that Dhamons former life was with the dark knights.
The book is well written. Interesting characters and there's love as well as anger between the companions. This is a book you want to keep reading. I can warmly recommend it.
