The Jensenbuilt Volvo P1800
1960 to 1963
Jensen produced the first 6000 P1800 sportscars for Volvo.
(Out of a total of 47485 cars of that type.)
The body was made in Linwood in Scotland, and sent for assembling in West
Bromwich. In 1958 Volvo and Jensen agreed on producing 10000 of the
sportscar brand. Jensen built a new factory to start the production.
Press pictures of the car was released in 1959, but the production didn't
start until may 1961.
But then started a discussion about the quality of the car.
Volvo stationed personnel at the West Bromwich-factory to watch the
production. They finally meant that the work wasn't good enough to suit the
Volvo-reputation, and when the new carfactory was built, the production of
the P1800 went to Sweden in the old factory. Volvo paid themselves out of the
contract, and put an S to the 1800-bagde - just to tell it was now built in
Sweden.
