First a few years back: Here's from a trip I made in Nordmarka in 1997.
Trip 2: The Koster islands (Kosteröarna)
From Oslo 0930 in the morning of 31th of March 2002: The trip went to the Swedish islands Koster, a short ferry trip from Strömstad.
We made our first stop at "Stenskeppet" (the stone ship) (located at Blomsholm, not far from Strömstad), a most interesting ship construction from ca. 500-1050 A.D. More information here.
The history of how Karl XII the summer of 1718 in a plan to attack the fortress of Fredriksten in Norway (today: Halden) had his vessels transported partly over land (the biggest weighing ca. 40 tons), is long as well as incredible. Traces are found at Blomsholm near to the stone ship. How many people who died of exhaustion during this process is not known. But many of them were probably buried inside the stone ship, a sacred place?
Koster consists of two main islands: Sydkoster and Nordkoster. This is Evert Taube land. Evert Taube, famous and extremely gifted Swedish folk singer, poet and composer, spent much time at Koster and was inspired from the beautiful landscape here. Among his Koster-inspired works counts the beautiful "Kosterflickornas visa".
Koster is easiest reached by ship from Strömstad. Here you find a couple of suggestions on what to do and where to move around on the islands.
The islands' highest peak is located near to the little church at Sydkoster (50 meters above sea level). 101 steps take you up there. From the top you have before you an impressing panoramic view. You can even "look to Norway" provided the weather is clear.
