Ivo de Figueiredo

Historian and writer

The second volume of my biography, HENRIK IBSEN. MASKEN (Henrik Ibsen. The Mask), was  published in October 2007 with great success - read the reviews on this volume as well as the previous, HENRIK IBSEN MENNESKET (Henrik Ibsen. The Man) from 2006.

This autumn (2008) I launched a book titled STØV (Dust) on the early nineteenth century poet Henrik Wergeland. The book follows up a similar book from 2006 titled SLIPP MEG (Let go), on Henrik Ibsen. Both books are sponsored by Sparebankstiftelsen and given to every seventeen year old in Norway. In addition the books can be purchased from any bookstore in the country.

Both STØV and SLIPP MEG are highly experimental in form, mixing text, pictures and design in an original way. Some has found the artistic expression shocking and provoking, especially the photographs. What on earth has a picture from Abu Graib got to do with Ibsen? And why in heavens name do I have to use the word "cunt" in a book about our great national hero Wergeland?

NEW

SLIPP MEG  received The Department of Culture and Church Affairs´ Award for non-fiction Literature for children and youth 2006 (Kirke- og kulturdepartementets pris for barne- og ungdomslitteratur. Fagbokprisen for 2006).

EVEN NEWER

After writing STØV I was asked to write a play based on the book. And so I did. Instructed by Bentein Baardson, and starring Morten Røhrt, shifting rapidly between the different characters, the play "STØV. En monologisk mangetale" is touring schools all around the country. I'll get back to both the book and the play soon.

The purpose of this website is to present my previous and current work and future plans as a freelance-historian. As a historian, my field has been modern Norwegian history, European Fascism and Second World War. Since 1994, I´ve been engaged in a number of projects which encompasses Norwegian fascism during the interwar-years, biography-writing, the restoration of Jewish property after The Second World War, the Norwegian legal trials after the war, Norwegian volunteers on the eastern front, collective wartime-memory and local history of the city of Fredrikstad. From 2002 I have been working on a new biography on the author Henrik Ibsen, wich has led my professional orientation more and more towards nineteenth century cultural history. In the autum of 2002, I received the Brage-award for my biography Fri mann. Johan Bernhard Hjort. En dannelseshistorie. See http://www.brageprisen.no/tekster/tidligere.shtml (hit "Tidligere vinnere"), or simply read what the jury had to say here)
