Sweden jails Italian Gothenburg summit protester
STOCKHOLM, Aug 1 (Reuters):
- A Swedish judge has jailed an Italian protester for two-and-a-half
years for hurling stones at police during rioting at a European
Union summit in Gothenburg in June, a court spokeswoman said on
Wednesday.
The 43-year-old was ordered to leave the country
when his sentence ends. There have been 18 similar cases in recent
weeks in the aftermath of riots and pitched battles in the port
city, in which police shot and injured three protesters, one seriously.
Last week the court sentenced another man to two-and-a-half
years in prison for plotting the riots. The prosecutor's office
has demanded a 25-year-old man be jailed for seven years for his
role in fuelling them.
Almost two weeks ago there were violent protests
at a summit of Group of Eight world leaders in Genoa, Italy, in
which one man was shot dead.
