By this stage, Belinda is squirming with embarrassment. She begs her mum to stop, but it’s clear she’s pleased by Laraine’s warm words. Of course, Belinda has plenty to say about her mum. If - and she stresses if - she is as gentle and sweet as Laraine says, it is because she has taken after her. “Mum is the kind of person who has always gone above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to lending a hand or helping out,” Belinda says proudly.”She is always there for you, so I guess if I am like that, it comes from her. Of course Dad is very sweet too, but I think I probably take after mum a little more.”
Both mother and, in particular, daughter want to stress theirs has not always been such a blissful relationship. Like most of us they have had their moments and Belinda points out they are “not like the Brady Bunch”. “Like any family we’ve had our moments,” Belinda says. “But there’s never been any real animosity between us, that’s for sure. We’re all very close.”
On Mother’s Day this year (1998), the entire family, including Belinda’s older sister and two younger brothers, will try to get together. On the day, Laraine will fuss over her children, making each of them feel special. Belinda says her mum is an ideal role model. “I’d like to be more like her as I grow older,” she says fondly. “I’d love to be as good a mum as she was. It sounds sappy, I know, but it’s true.”
