Emigrants
I am working on gathering information about descendants of emigrants from Norway to USA. On this page I will present the results of this work. I have made an overview of the individuals in my family file who was born in Norway and died in USA. Here is the emigrants from Hordaland and here from Rogaland. You have to have Acrobat Reader to see them.
Tjelle/Chally
Lars Lambrigtsen Tjelle (born Skålnes) used the Tjelle-farm in Skånevik from 1819 to 1844, when his son Lambrigt took over. Lars and his family lived on the farm for some years, but it was to small for such a large family. He emigrated in 1847 for USA on the ship "Kong Sverre". Lambrigt followed with his family in 1857. He left his family in USA and returned to Skånevik, but in 1867 he sold the farm to his cousin (my great grandmother) Maria Larsdtr Skålnes and her husband Sjur Haktorsen Vika, and travelled back to USA. In America Lars and his family changed their surname to Chally, and there is a great posterity all over USA. I have contact with some of my distant cousins over there, and here you can see what we have gathered so far. You can't find vital data of any living persons. Leknes/Likness
Lars's sister Brita married Lars Mikkelsen Leknes and farmed on the Leknes farm in Skaanevik. Some of their children emigrated to Illinois, USA. Here is all their descendants even if many of them stayed in Norway
Fosså - Fosaaen
My 2nd great-grandfather Knut Olsen Fosså, born Østerhus, (picture) had a brother Ola Olsen Fosså who emigrated from Hjelmeland to USA. He was born on the Østerhus farm in Erfjord parish in 1824 and died in Iowa in 1885. His wife was Inger Sofie Atletveit (1825-1911). In US the used the surname Fosaaen. Here is his descendants as far as I know. If you know anything about this family, please contact me.
3 sons of Knut emigrated to USA:
Ola Knutsen Fosså, born in 1861 on the Fosså farm in Hjelmeland. He emigrated to Iowa. He married Cecilie and they had a son, Racine Fosaaen (1910-1986) m. Alta Jungersen (1908-1978). They had as far as I know no children. Do you know more?
Andreas Knutsen Fosså (1866 - 1964) died in Ossian, Iowa. He was married to Marta Serina Kolbeinsdtr Sæbø. They had these descendants. If you know more, please send me a mail.
Knut Knutsen Fosså (1872-1952) died in Cando, North Dakota. He was married to Anne Brodal (1875-1952). With the help of one of his great-grandchildren, Eric Karl Fosaaen, I have got many of his descendants into my family file. Here you can see what I have so far.
