	Abidjan Obulkasim, Reshat Mehmet, Ismael Mehmet og Tursunjan Mehmet ble arrestert i Kashgar, i XUAR tidlig i 1995 fordi de skal ha diskutert politiske og menneskerettslige spørsmål under en fødselsdags-picnic i august 1994. De fire sitter i Liu Daowan Prison in Urumqi Amnesty International mener at disse blir holdt fanget for samvittighets-årsaker, fordi de kun har utøvet sin rett til å ytringsfrihet og organisasjons-frihet. Dette er i strid med internasjonale menneskerettigheter.

As a local group of Amnesty International we are concerned that four men have been detained in your country for several years as prisoners of conscience. They are: Abidjan Obulkasim, Reshat Mehmet, Ismael Mehmet and Tursunjan Mehmet arrested in Kashgar, in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region (XUAR) in the People’s Republic of China in early 1995 All four were detained because they were discussing political and human rights issues during a birthday picnic in August 1994. Amnesty International believes that they all are arbitrary imprisoned for the peaceful exercise of their right to freedom of opinion and association, in violation of international standards. It is calling on the Chinese authorities to release them immediately and unconditionally. The four detainees are held in the Liu Daowan Prison in Urumqi. We call for their immediate and unconditional release unless they are to be promptly charged with a recognisably criminal offence and tried in accordance with international standards of fair trial. We urge that they be held in humane conditions and that they receive adequate medical attention. Please note that Amnesty International does not take a position on the independence of the XUAR.
